Start Now to Avoid The Holiday Bulge

As a personal trainer and gym owner, I see this every year.  In January, folks come into our facility determined to start working out and lose the weight they gained through the holidays. So this year I thought it would be great to help everyone prior to the holidays to avoid a problem after the holidays. Why wait for the New Year? Why not create some of those good habits now? I am not talking about starting a diet, but starting to change your lifestyle. What is important to do is try to create good habits NOW- before the holidays!

Becky and I have started doing these all year long but we defiantly focus on our habits and what we are doing and NOT doing during the Holiday’s.

Every person can create new habits and or better their current habits with these 4 tips.

Start Researching Now for Healthy Alternatives to Typically Unhealthy Holiday Meals:

There are many alternatives you can use to create healthier meals. For example, instead of mashed potatoes, try mashed cauliflower.  A food processor is necessary to create this dish to make it smooth, and adding garlic and other spices can create a great tasting healthy alternative.  Another example would be using Ste via or apple sauce instead of sugar to sweeten your baked goods.  A little research & planning now goes a long way in keeping you healthy.

Create Better Eating Habits Overall:

You should be eating 5-6 small meals a day.  This has many benefits, but mainly it helps speeds up your metabolism, and eliminates “crashing” after having a big meal. Creating the habit of eating small portions throughout the day is essential in losing and then maintaining a healthy weight.

Get Moving – Fitness

Just get out and move a little bit each day, baby steps right now. Then, as you progress, get moving faster and more often you will see a dramatic difference in your energy levels and foods you are eating and craving.  You will automatically be more conscious of what you are putting into your body.  If motivation is lacking, ask a friend to walk or exercise with you.  If you need a personal trainer find one you trust to help you become healthier.

Food Preparation – Gifts / Parties

Being prepared is key!  While you are researching alternatives you can experiment in the kitchen with friends & family. Create healthier foods for gifts or parties.  Remember that nutritious foods don’t have to taste bad, you can easily create great baked goods, snacks, or dinners that are healthy. Come to the realization that you need to eat to live not live to eat!
Creating habits NOW that will eventually change your life, leave a legacy, and create a healthier holiday for you and your family is essential in creating a healthy lifestyle. Remember it isn’t about a diet, or losing weight, or looking great for the Christmas Cards. It is about your health and quality of life.
